What is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is removing a layer from the anterior part of the cornea with the help of a laser and applying an Excimer laser to the lower region. Through laser eye surgery, the patient’s vision will be corrected.

LASIK eye surgery is a treatment method for astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia patients. To have the operation, patients must be over the age of 18. In addition, the patient’s eyeglasses number mustn’t increase. Patients who meet these two conditions should undergo a detailed eye examination. The following should be checked during the examination:

  • Assessment of the corneal layer to which the laser will be applied.
  • Assessment of eye surface maps.
  • Measuring corneal thickness.

The main reasons to get laser eye surgery are to improve eyesight and blurry vision and want to get rid of glasses or not use contact lenses. To have laser eye surgery, the person must be over 18 years old, the progression of the eyeglasses number must have stopped, and there must be no other eye disease that will prevent the procedure. There is no upper age limit for the treatment if there is no cataract or onset of cataract. However, due to ageing after 50 years old, doctors do not prefer the laser method as the corneal thickness can diminish with age. Nevertheless, laser surgery is a reliable and effective treatment method when applied correctly by expert doctors.

PRK-LASIK provides superficial treatment in the cornea. With the PRK technique and with the help of a spatula or alcohol, the corneal epithelium is removed, and the laser is applied to the underlying stroma with the LASEK technique. It is one of the best standards for myopia and hyperopia surgeries worldwide and is used safely. Intralase LASIK (iLASIK) is the most advanced laser treatment method for refractive errors and is safer than other treatment methods. In the management of computer-controlled systems, the incision required for LASIK is made with a laser.

With this method, a persons corneal map can be mapped, and personalised treatment can be performed.

To be suitable for laser eye surgery, the following information will be evaluated by doctors:

The patients eye defects, degree of eye defect, health status, age, and eye structure are considered, and a treatment method is chosen upon assessment.

LASIK Eye Surgery

While laser eye surgery is performed with the LASIK technique, there is no obstacle to operating on both eyes. The operation is performed with local anaesthesia, anaesthetic drops, and patients are discharged on the same day. Patients should rest for one day to return to their daily lives quickly. The process takes about 30 minutes in total. Research reveals that LASIK surgery is today’s most preferred laser surgery method. After LASIK laser eye surgery, patients get rid of their glasses and lenses and switch to a more free life. After the operation, there are no

visible aesthetic changes to the patient’s eye.

Recovery After LASIK Laser Eye Surgery

In the LASIK procedure, the epithelial tissue of the patient remains intact. Thus, the patient’s vision becomes better from the first moment. Patients consider this situation miraculous. Furthermore, the patient’s recovery process after the operation progresses very quickly. After the procedure, patients can return to work life after 24 hours of rest. Likewise, the ability to see, in other words, your vision, reaches a clear vision within two days.

How Long Does Laser Eye Surgery Take?

The vast majority of people are satisfied with a single laser eye treatment. They usually enjoy many years of trouble-free vision after eye surgery. However, as we age, everyone’s eyes tend to deteriorate gradually. Unfortunately, there is no way to stop this at the moment. Laser eye surgery will permanently reshape the eye’s cornea and remove all its imperfections. As a result, your eyesight will most likely be as sharp as it should be. However, myopia and farsightedness may continue to develop after surgery. Laser eye surgery takes 10-15 minutes in both eyes. The person does not feel pain during a laser eye surgery operation.

Although LASIK surgery straightens the cornea, the muscles around the eyes weaken with age, potentially causing new problems. However, it is unlikely that your vision will become worse than it was before the surgery. For this reason, even if you develop minor eye disorders after the first surgery, you will have better vision than before the operation. It is noteworthy that the referred minor disorders are the ones that happen due to ageing, such as eyelids sagging. Any illness, such as diabetes, or a complication like trauma to the eye that will affect your vision, must be treated.

RELEX / SMILE Laser Eye Surgery

It is a laser technology method that provides the opportunity to be treated up to -10 in myopia and up to -5 in astigmatism with the personalised bladeless SMILE laser method in treating myopia and astigmatism. It is a suitable treatment method for athletes and occupational groups at risk of physical impact and pressure exposure.

You can contact us for detailed information about RELEX / SMILE Laser eye surgery and learn if you are suitable for Relex / Smile operation in Turkey.

TREATMENT PHASE

With Zeiss Visumax Femtosecond technology, a thin disc-shaped tissue is created in the front layer of the eye (cornea) in one step, and this tissue pulls it out of the cornea through the 2.0 mm opening in the cornea. There is no need to cut any valves. As a result of removing the lenticular (tissue) formed in the eye, the shape of the cornea is changed and the refractive error in the eye is corrected. Since no flap is created, corneal biomechanics is less affected.

TransPRK Laser Eye Surgery

TransPRK Laser Eye Surgery, also known as No-Touch Smart Laser eye surgery, is a personalised non-contact laser made using the wavefront principle and iris identification technology to treat myopia and astigmatism. It is made without touching the eye. The colloquial name of this method is drawing eyes. With iris recognition, the rotation of the eye in its axis can be calculated, and this method enables us to treat astigmatism in the most accurate axis.

TransPRK is a painless method performed only under drop anaesthesia, as with other laser treatment methods. TransPRK laser surgery is performed by directly contacting the laser device’s rays to the eye. Unlike the Lasik method, there is no need to remove a thin membrane. For this reason, it is preferred, especially for those who do sports with heavy and risky trauma. Like other laser methods, this can be applied to both eyes during the same session. No touch laser surgery is suitable for the treatment of astigmatism and myopia.

ILASIK Laser Eye Surgery

iLasik is a bladeless laser application and is entirely personal. At the first stage of the application, a personal view profile is prepared with state-of-the-art devices. This technology creates a 3D map of your visual defects. Then, the digital information obtained from this map is used in a personalised treatment process. The program is determined by evaluating the image obtained in the retina layer by sending a light beam to the eye. After the evaluation with special Wavefront analysers, the operation decision is made.

Measurements are performed in a sitting position, while the operation is performed in a lying position. After the iLasik Laser Eye Surgery, a protective lens is placed on the eyes. Conditions such as stinging, redness, discomfort from light and blurry vision of small texts on the TV may occur for 36 hours. Vision becomes clear in 10 days after iLasik laser eye surgery. It is painful and uncomfortable for about 2-4 days after the operation.

PRK Laser Eye Surgery

PRK laser eye surgery is applied to treat myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. PRK method is preferred when the patient does not have a sufficient corneal thickness for LASIK treatment. PRK eye surgery is the absence of the flap lift movement used in LASIK surgery. Instead, the epithelial layer on the corneal surface is scraped. Then the excimer laser is applied to the underlying tissue. Thus, the cornea is reshaped.

Most patients prefer photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) as an option to treat myopia. However, it is also preferred in treating disorders such as astigmatism and hyperopia. The discovery of PRK predates LASIK surgery. However, the PRK laser healing process is longer than the recovery period after LASIK surgery. Therefore, although LASIK operation is widely preferred, PRK treatment is applied to patients with unsuitable corneal structures for LASIK.

In this treatment, a thin layer (flap) is not created with an incision in the cornea, and the laser starts directly from the outer surface. Instead, PRK operation applies Excimer Laser to the underlying tissue by stripping the thin living tissue, epithelium, at the cornea’s top. At the end of the operation, transparent and unnumbered contact lenses are placed on the eye for a few days to protect the corneal surface. After the procedure, it is painful and uncomfortable for about 2-4 days, and gaining good vision may take up to 3-4 weeks.

Differences Between LASIK and LASEK Eye Surgery

LASEK operation is generally applied to patients with thin corneal structures. However, this is not the only criterion when making a decision. Depending on the doctor’s evaluation, even if the patient has a thick corneal structure, the doctor may choose the Lasek method as it is more suitable for the patient. The most significant difference between LASIK and LASEK is the healing process. The recovery period after LASIK laser eye surgery is shorter than LASEK. Recovery times in LASEK eye surgeries can exceed several days. In addition, pain may be experienced in the first three days after the procedure. In general, it can be said that the LASEK operation is a more challenging operation than the LASIK operation.

Differences Between LASIK and PRK Eye Surgery

The most significant difference between PRK eye surgery and LASIK laser eye surgery is the first step taken when starting the procedure. In the LASIK operation, an incision is made to the flap on the cornea. The flap is then lifted to expose the underlying cornea, and the cornea is shaped with a laser. In PRK surgery, the thin outer surface of the cornea is scraped. This outer surface is called epithelial tissue. Next, the patient’s cornea is shaped by a laser. The epithelial tissue of the patient is expected to regenerate on its own.

Who is a Good Candidate for LASIK Laser Eye Surgery?

The most significant advantage of LASIK laser eye surgery is that it can be applied to almost everyone, except for people with rare disorders. This surgical procedure, which can be applied to patients with astigmatism, and near or far vision problems, gives speedy and successful results. However, one of its essential advantages is that the recovery phase is very short. However, it should be noted that the LASIK procedure is not suitable for people with very thin corneas or dry eyes. In addition, LASIK is not preferred with patients who are involved with contact sports or have a very active lifestyle. This is because the flap will be lifted during the operation, and during the healing process, it can take up to a week for the flap to merge fully. If the flap does not merge properly, it can cause blurry vision, leading to a secondary operation.

For this reason, it is not considered appropriate to have LASIK surgery for those involved in sports with a high probability of getting a blow to their eyes or with similar risks.
